EXPO 2021 - Welcome Messages

Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Professor Rocky S. TUAN

Vice-Chancellor / President
Lee Quo Wei and Lee Yick Hoi Lun Professor of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo (the Expo), to be held virtually from 26 to 30 July 2021.

First held in 2017, the Expo was a relatively small assembly of like-minded teachers who were excited to share their teaching innovations and breakthroughs. Over the years, the Expo has developed into a reputable and sizable platform to showcase creative ideas and good practices, as well as to rally mutual support and inspiration. It is exactly the innovative and collaborative spirit that helps us thrive in times of crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted normal teaching and learning activities around the world.  Despite the challenging circumstances, our teachers had continued to develop new solutions and initiatives to deliver to our students the desired learning outcomes. Their dedication to excellence is much appreciated.  I am thrilled to know that our online teaching and learning has received very positive feedback from both students and teachers.

There is always plenty of room for further enhancement. The Expo is therefore a much-needed platform for us to exchange good practices and to equip ourselves with new skills and knowledge. I sincerely wish the Expo 2021 a huge success and everyone a rewarding experience.

The annual Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo at CUHK brings together faculty, staff, and students to celebrate their recent teaching and learning achievements and exchange ideas and best practices. Despite the unprecedented challenges presented by the pandemic outbreak last year, the Expo still attracted 63 posters, 46 oral presentations, and over 1,300 Zoom entrants. The active participation of the CUHK community affirms our commitment to achieving teaching excellence and providing the best support for students, no matter how dire the circumstances may be. I am therefore very pleased to invite you again to this meaningful event which will take place from 26 July to 30 July.

This year, the Expo will feature a pre-event with invited talks on the latest eLearning solutions and how the new technologies can improve learning experiences. There will also be a workshop on service learning, which helps to cultivate important civic values among our students. The main event of the Expo, as in previous years, will see recipients of the University Education Awards sharing their stories and insight into good teaching. There will be panel discussions focusing on the most pressing issues facing higher education today, as well as a rich collection of posters and oral presentations by teachers from CUHK and sister institutions.

The 2021 edition of the Expo, I am sure, will continue to be a highlight of the academic calendar and offer much food for thought. I look forward to welcoming you to the Expo soon.
